At the meeting, they heard from a number of speakers and elected officers for the coining year in each of the five locals within the district. Daniel Martin, Inter- State’s vice-president and a dairyman from Manheim, told the group about the work their cooperative was doing on their behalf. He enumerated the steps leading up to the decision last month by Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz to boost milk price supports to 80-percent of parity. Martin said that Inter- State had led the battle to get higher prices. He reminded the group that their co-op had organized the peaceful march on Washington in November. He said that while the march didn’t result directly in a price boost, he was confident that it was an important factor behind the decision to finally raise the support price. Martin also noted that Inter-State members were presently receiving cost of production adjustments over Federal Order 4 prices, and that these payments were secured from the co-op’s 21 dairy customers by monthly negotiations. He said these kinds of activities needed and deserved the support of the membership. Boyd Gartley, the co-op’s director of member and public relations, also told the members about some of the things the staff has been doing to secure better milk prices for farmers. Other speakers were Earl Stauffer, Ephrata, who gave a delegate’s report on the annual Inter-State meeting in Philadelphia, and Andrew Marvin, Ephrata, the District 7 fieldman. In his speech, Daniel Martin announced that the annual Inter-State meeting this year would be held on Nov. 25-26 at the Host Farm in Lancaster. Honored during the meeting were Mr. and Mrs. Elvin T. Hamish, Willow Street Rl, who have been members of Inter-State for a quarter of a century. Elections for new officers and directors from the five locals were held during the meeting.
