Laundry Brighteners Brighteners or fluorescent whiteners, used in laundry detergents, coat the fibers of a garment with a “colorless dyestuff” during washing to reduce yellowing in whites and to brighten colors. Mrs. Ruth Ann Wilson, Extension clothing and textiles specialist at The Penn sylvania State University, says they act by converting invisible ultraviolet radiation to visible light so the yellowness is masked. Light reflectance and brightness are increased. Optical substances enhance but do not take the place of good laundering procedures. SSh* & , 4, K * V? LANCASTER EQUIPMENT CENTER, INC.
