l ADIES ,*n J I HAVE foi I YOU HEARD? •ii By Doris Thomas, Extension Home Economist ON CONSERVING ENERGY The amount of energy used to heat water for your home should be carefully con* sldered if you’re trying to conserve energy. Almost 15 percent of the energy used in the home is used to heat water. Hot water, 140 degrees F, is needed for best results in automatic dish* washing and laundering white and colorfast cottons and blends. Hot water is needed to assure sanitation and the best detergent action in your washer and dish* washer and to inhibit streaking and spotting in the dishwasher. There are ways that you can make certain that you get the most out of the water you beat without dropping your setting below the 140 degrees F. 1. Change your habits and use cold water for rinsing clothes (this will affect MEN’S & BOYS’ REGULAR $3.49. BASKETBALL SNEAKERS Assorted Colors. Stop any hot water leaks check all outlets. 3. Insulate hot water pipes so you don’t heat more water than you use. 4. Cut down on hot water for personal use such as showering instead of bathing (you can turn the water off while you’re soaping ... even that helps!). To cut down on the use of energy by refrigerators or freezers try the following suggestions. You might consider lowering the room tem perature in the winter when you are adding heat to the kitchen (refrigerator freezer) area. For example if in cooling refrigerator air from a room at 72 degrees F to 32 degrees F the tem perature must be lowered by 40 degrees F ... if the room temperature is reduced 6 tXWFI REDUCED TO PJ REDUCED TO degrees F, the Interior needs only be dropped 34 degrees F a saving of about IS percent. You might also be sure to isolate the refrigerator from heat sources such as the sun, heaters, or the range. These sources make heat enter the refrigerator faster so it must run more. “Promote proper energy exchange" means to allow space for the condenser coils on the back of the refrigerator and keep coils dust free. Defrost regularly before frost is U inch thick. And, of course, try not to open the refrigerator (or freezer) door more than necessary. Make each opening count. The refrigerator tem perature should not be set higher, nor the food cooled to room temperature before refrigerating. To protect the quality and safety of foods you should refrigerate food as soon as possible. In purchasing a new refrigerator, however, it is wise not to buy a refrigerator that is much too_ large because it uses extra energy, naturally, to keep the extra space cool. You should check for a good insulated box. Some refrigerators have a high-low humidity switch. Keeping the switch at “low humidity” setting (except ENGINEER Our Regular Price Is $13.98. BUYING FABRICS ONSALE When fabrics arc on sale you may be able to buy quality items you might normally feel you can’t afford. Don’t get carried away by a big markdown. Nothing is a bargain unless you have a use for it. Remember, sale mer chandise is usually not returnable. Money spent for fabric you will never use is a poor investment compared to the same amount spent for something you will use often. Keep in mind that styles could change and your fabric could be out of fashion. And be careful about stocking up on velvets and other crushables unless you can store them properly. Also, buy the fabrics that were new this season because they are likely to be around next year. If your storage is adequate and you can store woolens to prevent moth damage, you can buy some fabrics to use next year. But before you get too enthusiastic, remember that the new fabrics next fall will tempt you too, and you may wish you didn’t have to make up that bargain. No longer is he looked down on as a country bumpkin who doesn’t know which side is up. Gradually, other people realize that he must have a lot of scientific knowledge and a progressive nature in order to stay on top. A few decades ago to the back of the “to make” drawer for a long time until they are out of style or you no longer like them. If you never use the fabric it’s no bargain. Most seamstresses have drawers full of such bargains, so before you add any more, take stock of how much you have on hand, your clothing needs and how much time you have to sew. children felt Inferior if they lived on a farm but now the reverse is true and they are even envied a bit. Farms were slower getting electric lights, bathrooms and telephones but now you often fmd big and fancy homes on the farm. My roots are deep in the soil and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Guess, I’d rather have “a piece of bread in my pocket than a feather in my hat.” I just realized that my ancestors and my husband’s ancestors have always been farmers. Oh, they may have taught school for a few years or built a flour mill in their later years but their living was made growing crops on God’s earth. Let us hope the farmers continue to deserve respect from their neigh bors. XXX My father always said that “everything takes time.” Now I would like to make things happen in a hurry. But, I’m afraid he was right. A building takes months instead of weeks to finish, my watch repair takes 6 weeks instead of the 6 days, I’d hoped for, and a suit my husband ordered took 3 weeks instead of 3 days to come from Lancaster to Leola. Of course they lost the directions and couldn’t look in the phone book for our number! But that didn’t make it any easier to wait as new clothes are few and far between around here. I suppose the same logic of “everything takes time” applies to all the repairs that are put off from year to year.
