Developing Bahama Agriculture
Development, of
agriculture in the Bahamas -
an area related traditionally
to fishing and tourism - is the
goal of a project within the
College of Agriculture at The
Pennsylvania State
University. Experiments are
already underway with
livestock, forages, and other
crops.
Bahama islanders produce
only 15 per cent of their total
food needs, according to Dr.
Robert H. McAlezander,
Coordinator of International
Agricultural Development at
Penn State. Over 60 million
dollars in foreign exchange
is spent on food imports to
Jamaica each year, he said.
The Bahamian government,
be added, wants to reduce
these foreign exchange costs
by increasing food
production.
“We expect the results of a
pilot project in producing
livestock and food crops will
apply to many islands in the
Bahamas as well as other
tropical countries,” Dr.
McAlezander stated.
Penn State personnel have
a pile* project underway on
Andros Island. The work is
supported hy funds from the
U.S. Agency for In
ternational Development
(USAID). Non-degree
training and logistical
support come from the
Western Institute of Science
and Technology (WIST) of
Waco, Texas.
A center for research,
training, and demonstration
has been established on
Andros Island. Research

Plans are being made to
establish 18 family-sized
operations over the next
three years. This requires
training programs for
Bahamians to become
farmers. In the past,
agriculture has never been
an important part of the
economy.
People of Bahama are
being trained to operate the
center. Bahamian coun
terparts to Penn State and
WIST personnel are being
appointed. Ten to 12 people
from the Bahamas will be
brought to Penn State or
other universities for degree
programs in agriculture,
mainly at the master of
science degree level. Upon
graduation, these in

key roles at the center.
Fifty-one purebred
females and 7 purebred bulls
are mong the 140 lots
selected for American
Simmental Association’s sth
annual national sale, Sunday
afternoon, February 23, at
the Houston, Texas
Astrodome.
The sale is preceded, on
February 22, by ASA’s 7th
annual convention at the
Astroworld Hotel. All
Simmental events are being
held during Houston’s Stock
Show and Rodeo.
Leading the 140 lots of
performance-tested Sim
mentals are three purebred
cow - heifer calf pairs. One of
the three cows sells
guaranteed safe-in-calf,
another sells as bred and
third is open, according to
Chester Martin, Henderson,
Texas rancher and sale
chairman.
The sale offering also
includes two purebred
Sinunental heifers, safe-in
calf, and 46 open purebred
Sinunental heifers. The
seven purebred Sinunental
bulls include four consigned
by U.S. breeders and three
from Canada.
“For all practical pur
poses, the U.S. border has
been closed to imports from
Canada. U.S. Department of
Agriculture officials don’t
expect the embargo to be
lifted until August, 1975.
Since entry through Canada
has played an important role
in our breed, the import ban
focuses greater interest on
the 58 purebreds in this
sale,” Martin said.
Consignments, in addition
to the purebreds, include
38%-blood Simmental
heifers, selling safe-in-calf,
and 43% bloods selling open.
ASA sale rules specify that
females selling safe-in-calf
must have been bred at least
90 days prior to palpitation
by .a licensed veterinarian,
and his certificate of
pregnancy must accompany
each individual.
“Performance data from
the 1975 National Simmental
Sire Summary is included in
the sale catalog so that a
prospective buyer can select
females carrying the per
formance traits most needed
in his herd. Since per
formance testing is man

performance data shows
how each sire’s progeny
