Committee spokesman Samuel S. Cobb, Director of the Bureau of Forestry in the Department of En vironmental Resources, said the planting of trees offers lasting benefits to citizens and to communities, benefits which will continue for decades after the actual Bicentennial year. “Few, indeed, are the communities, be they large cities or rural villages, which do not offer situations where the well-planned planting of trees, in dividually or on a large scale, cannot enhance the beauty or enrich the life of the residents,” Cobb said. Typical situations that exist in almost any com munity include: - Initial planting of shade trees. - Replacement of lost or dying shade trees. - Landscaping of parks, green belts and other areas of public land not devoted to some intensive recreational use. - Establishment of green belts along streams and other narrow land strips unusable for other purposes. - Screening of unat tractive areas on the ap proaches to communities such as mine spoil banks, waste banks, quarries jmd other eyesores. - Establishment of school or town forests for outdoor educational areas in con servation and ecology. Such projects lend themselves to action by clubs, civic organizations, youth groups, schools and local governments. To have such projects underway during the 1976 Bicentennial year, planning should be started now, Cobb said. There are a number of State and Federal agencies which can, and will, provide technical and professional assistance in formulating such plans as well as ad vising on sources of tree stock.
