Those receiving the coveted award were: Charles N. Dodd, Route 2, Corry, Warren County; Wayne and Harold Lesher, Route 1, Bernville, Berks County; Gerald Parker, Star Route, Liberty, Tioga County; Charles R. Phillips, Box 5, Pillow, Dauphin County: William H. Rmgler, Route 1, Berlin, Somerset County; and Richard B. Trostel, Route 1, Biglerville, Adams County. Both are a commercial venture in their own right - some 80 milk cows and 18,000 laying hens. Poultryman Charles Phillips specializes in game birds - pheasants and chukar partridges. He sells some 40,000 mature birds each year either live to shooting preserves or as dressed game birds. William Rmgler, a dairyman and potato grower, operates a farm that’s been in the family over 200 years. Crops are spread over 450 acres with 55 dairy cows in the milking string. He farms in partnership with his son, Jim. The only fruit grower in this year’s class of Master Farmers, Richard Trostel, has 200 acres of apple, cherry, peach, pear and plum orchards. An in novator, Trostel was one of the first to use dwarf fruit trees and introduced trickle irrigation in Pennsylvania orchards.
