caring for belts after corn
bining is completed may
save you a lot of dollars next
summer.
Belts remaining on the unit
under tension tend to develop
flat spots where they contact
the sheaves. When the
combine returns to the field,
the flat spots pound like
hammers on the sheaves and
bearings. They pick up rust
from the sheaves that acts
like a grinding compound on
the belt sides.
Bert A. Dundas, general
supervisor, Service
Department, Agricultural
Sales and Marketing
Division, Allis-Chalmers
Corp., suggests these four
simple maintenance jobs:
1. Remove all belts.
2. Coil the belts in a loose
coil so they are not kinked.
3. Store in a dry, cool area.
4. Oil belt contact surfaces
on the sheaves to prevent
rusting.
Dundas says this plan will
prolong belt life, and cut the
chances of downtime during
harvest. It is an end-of-toe
season maintenance plan
that can prevent premature
belt failure in the midst of
harvest.
