Chester Baby Beef Show
The champion English
Breed steer exhibited by
William Wylie was named
the grand champion steer at
the Chester County 4-H Beef
Show. The grand champion
trophy was presented to
William by Mr. & Mrs.
James Robinson, West
Chester.
William’s brothers, David
and James were named
champion and reserve
champion senior showman
respectively. The Wylies are
the sons of Mr. & Mrs.
Samuel Wylie, Jr., Not
tingham.
The reserve grand
champion steer of the show
was the reserve champion
English Breed steer
exhibited by Nelson Beam,
Elverson. Nelson, son of Mr.
& Mrs. Omar Beam,*
received the reserve grand
champion trophy from Mr. &
Mrs. Kerstetter, West
Chester.
Gordon Smith, Lan
denberg, exhibited the
champion crossbred steer
while his sister Lori
exhibited the reserve
champion crossbred steer.
Lori was also named reserve
champion first year
showman.
Named champion
showman for the first year
division was William
Grooves, West Chester,
while John Holloway, West
Chester was named
champion junior showman.
Reserve champion junior
showman honors went to
Rachel Holloway, West
Chester.
For conformation judging
the steers were divided into
two divisions. The Herefords
and Angus were shown in the
English Division. Other
breeds and crossbred steers
were shown in the Crossbred
Division. Within each
division the steers were
grouped into classes based
on their weight. Then the
steers were evaluated on
their ability to produce
meat.
Placings in the English
Breed heavyweight class
were Ist. William Wylie, 2nd
Nelson Beam, 3rd William
Groves, 4th Donald Stoltzfus,
Elverson, sth Esther Howe,
Elverson, 6th James Goold,
Glen Moore, 7th David
Anderson, Pocopson and Bth
Tncia Bartram, West
Chester.
Rachel Holloway placed
first in the English Breed
medium weight class while
her brother John placed
second. Other placings in
cluded 3rd Ed Wylie, Not
tingham, 4th Richard
Coleman, West Chester, sth
Barbara Sickler, West
Chester, 6th Barbara Bar
tram, West Chester, 7th
Robert Ambler, Jr.,

In the Crossbred Division
placings in the heavyweight

In the lightweight class
placings were Ist Howard
Stoltzfus, Elverson, 2nd
David Wylie, 3rd James
Wylie and 4th Chris Ambler,
Cochranville.
John Holloway showed the
first place heifer in the
Angus Breeding Class while
Barbara Sickler showed the
second place and Cheryl
Wojtowicz third place
heifers. In the Charolis Bree
ding Class Gordon Smith
showed the first place heifer
and Lon Smith the second
4-H Leaders
Can Save on
Income Tax

There are many volunteer
4-H leaders in Lancaster
County who contribute their
time, effort and money to
this fine educational
program.
To assist them in reducing
their 1974 income taxes, a
number of items may be
claimed as charitable
deductions by those leaders
who itemize their deduc
tions.
The following deductible
items can be included:
- Out of pocket tran
sportation expenses, in
cluding cost for use of cars or
trucks to and from all 4-H
sponsored events,
necessarily incurred in
rendering donated service to
4-H.
- Actual unreimbursed
expenses incurred by 4-H
adult leaders in attending
contests, training courses
and other 4-H sponsored
events. This includes meals,
lodgmg and transportation
expenses while away from
home.
- Cash contributions and
contributions in kind, such as
equipment, paints and other
supplies. The amount to be
deducted is the fair market
value at the tune the gift was
made. No deduction is
allowable for the “time” you
contribute.
Leaders who claim these
deductions should keep
accurate records of all ex
penses incurred.

Following the judging nine
steers were selected to
represent Chester County at
the Pennsylvania State
Farm Show, January 6-10,
1975. Selected were steers
owned by Nelson Beam,
William Grooves, Esther
Howe, John & Rachel
Holloway, Howard Stoltzfus
and David, Ed, and James
Wylie.

West Chester, with thirty
one 4-H members par
ticipating. Wiliam Hodge,
Manager, Irvington Farms,
Gaithersburg, Md. was the
type judge and William
Keck, Assistant Bucks
County Agricultural Agent
was the showmanship judge.
This activity is one of
many sponsored by the
A
Chester County 4-H Beef
Club and the Chester County
Cooperative Extension
Service. Members of the club’
receive guidance and in
struction from Mr. & Mrs.
William Holloway, West
Chester, Conrad Grove,
Downingtown, and Milton
Howe, Elverson, volunteer
adult leaders who donate
their time to this 4-H youth
program.
