operation consists of 169

There are 12 cows classified
excellent in the Mowry herd,
and another 47 graded very
good. There are 38 Ivanhoe
Prince daughters in their
herd. Kenneth Mowry took
over the operation of the
farm when his father retired.
Kenneth Mowry’s ears are
no doubt still ringing with the
phrase, “How did you do it?”
He told the crowd Tuesday
exactly how he did it.
“We fed Corinne the same
as we feed the other cows.
She Just eats a little more,
and she eats three times a
day instead of twice. We did
try to stick as closely as we
possibly could to her milking
schedule, but other than
that, she got no special
treatment.
“There has never been a
milk record more out in the
open than this one,” Mowry
told the crowd. “She was
tested, check tested, spot
tested and retested all along
the way. We’ve got a blow
by-blow account, of her
entire lactation.”
Corinne is not the only
outstanding cow in the
Mowry herd. A herdmate
holds the junior two-year-old
production record with 31,428
pounds of milk. Another
Mowry cow has the junior
three-year-old record with
36,400 pounds. The fifth and
sixth place production
records for mature cows also
belong to Mowry animals.
Corinne’s visitors left the
farm about noon and wound
through the Bedford County
hills to the Jaffa Shrine
Mosque in Altoona for lunch.

Corinne on Wednesday, the day she Kenneth Mowry, Roaring Spring, Pa.

Some 900 guests watched as
the Mowrys accepted
awards from Pennsylvania
Secretary of Agriculture
James A. McHale and from a
U.S. Department of
Agriculture representative.
They listened while others
extolled the virtues of
Corinne, and they listened to
expert advice on how to
manage a cow that’s
producing 180 pounds of milk
a day.
“We put all the production
figures and feed

requirements into our
computer,” Dr. Richard
Peacock told the audience.
“We asked the computer
how to feed a cow that’s
producing that much milk,
and the computer told us it
couldn’t be done.” Peacock
is director of Pennfield
Corp.’s nutrition program.
Peacock and other dairy
nutritionists throughout the
day said that they just don’t
know enough about how
Corinne does what she does
to adjust their feeding for
