Putnam, Extension dairy specialist at The Pennsylvania State University. Anyone using a flame torch to thaw frozen pipes should be careful. This is because the flame is very hot and can easily start a fire. Putnam suggests it might be safer to use a special electric cable, rather than a torch, particularly for pipes which run through areas that are near hay or other flammable materials.
