Sheep Producers
Approve Promotion
Sheep producers have
voted to continue their
national lamb and wool
promotion program by
approving a proposed new
agreement between the
Secretary of Agriculture and
the American Sheep
Producers Council, Inc.
(ASPC.).
According to. the U.S.
Department of Agriculture,
preliminary returns from a
mail referendum held
November 4 through 15,
about 85.5 percent of the
producers, owning 87.8
percent of the sheep
represented by those voting
in the referendum, favored
the public relations, ad
vertising and sales
promotion activities of the
Denver-based ASPC.
Howard Derrick of
Eldorado, Texas, President
of the ASPC, said the
overwhelming vote of the
sheep producers throughout
the nation heralds a new era
in the sheep industry’s ef
forts to grow and prosper.
Derrick said the ASPC will
expend ever effort not only to
promote the products of the
industry but to assist the
entire industry in stopping
the downward trend in sheep

numbers that has been going
on for almost 14 years.
“Lamb and wool”, he
added, “can play an im
portant part in the nation’s
determination to increase
production of food and fiber.
The industry itself has beena
part of the American scene
since the days of the
conquistadors and pilgrims.
We think the sheep industry
can double production in ten
years. Promotion will not
only work to improve the
, status of the sheep industry
and the sheepman, but will
prpvide new markets for the
intened increase in
production.”
Derrick said the Council is
developing new approaches
to the promotion of lamb and
wool. “Many of our problems
are the result of a lack of
awareness of how sheep are
raised and marketed. We are
expanding our public
relations efforts to explain
the true facts about the
domestic sheep industry to
the consumer.”
