Lanpher and Harold Owne,s farm management and agronomy specialists, Ex tension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. The combination of tight fertilizer supplies, higher fertilizer prices, and variable returns from dif ferent crops makes k more important than ever that farmers utilize these decision-making aids in planning for the 1975 crop DAVID H. GOOD year. Some states are using new computer programs which arc available by remote terminal to help make decisions on fertilizer use have been developed. Michigan State University, Cooperative Extension Service specialists have developed a computer program which calculates the most profitable nitrogen fertilizer rate to apply to maximize income for com. This computer technique also indicates how a restricted supply of nitrogen fertilizer might be allocated between fields to obtain optimal results. Michigan has also prepared some worksheets for individuals to use fertilizer to maximize income from corn and soybean acreage com binations. Virginia Polytechnic In stitute and State University, Cooperative Extension Service staff developed a computer program which provides a simultaneous solution to the rate of nitrogen fertilizer per acre that should be applied to com on five different soil productivity groupings, and the optimum combination of com and soybean acreage. This computer program is stored on the computerized management network (coordinated by VPO staff). Tables to help plan op timum nitrogen rates for crops are now available. For example, Kansas State Cooperative Extension Service has recently prepared tables to help farmers select optimum rates of nitrogen to apply to the soil producing wheat, com, or grain sorghum. The com and grain sorghum tables are based on response data of these crops produced under irrigation. Kansas agronomists state efficient use of nitrogen on wheat in the Plains States should be based on soil tests for residual nitrogen. A test lets the farmer include nitrogen available in the soil in calculating the amounts of nitrogen to add. Worksheets have been developed by several states which can be used to com pare several fields or crops with the objective of ob taining an equal return for the last marginal increment of fertilizer applied to each field and-or crop. Successful use of these planning and decision-making techniques depends heavily on the farmer's understanding of production response curves, i.e. the increased yield ex pected for additional amounts of fertilizer. The farmer needs to make ac curate estimates of yield responses expected from his particular fields and crops.
