It was recently estimated
that there are approximately
eight million horses in this
country with just about that
many people interested in
riding and showing the
animals. Lancaster County
is no exception as for many
in the county horse-back
riding and showing has
become either a very
pleasant hobby or a way of
life.
Noting the interest many
young people showed toward
riding and showing horses, 4-
H leaders in the County
began including horse
projects in their clubs
a number of years ago.
Today in Lancaster County
there are over 200 4-H Horse
Club members distributed
into eight separate clubs
including the Silver Spurs,
Boots and Saddles, Sequoia
Ridgers, Conestoga
Crusdaers, Broken Bit ; Bit
and Bradoon, Rough Riders
and Saddle Cinches.
Each club is made up of
young people from the ages
of 9-19 and is manned by
several leaders who have
either had training in hor
semanship or practice it as

4-H Horse Clubs Popular

a profession.
Although the youth are in
separate clubs, they learn
much the same ideas and
receive instruction in hor
semanship, training and
showing horses and even
learn health care and proper
management.
The youngsters not only
compete in riding events but
participate in all 4-H events
including demonstrations
and county activities.
Many of the clubs seek
outside help for educational
programs that include
speakers on health care and
demonstrations and clinics.
Jay Irwin, Associate
County Agent and 4-H
director for the Horse Clubs
explained the situation.
“We have had excellent
response from the people not
directly involved in 4-H work
for our horse clubs.”
Mrs. Charles Risser, a
leader in the Broken Bit
Club, reinforced that idea.
She explained that members
of the community realize the
importance that the 4-H
Horse Clubs place on in
dividual responsibility and
respect the 4-H riders often
giving them priviledge to
cross their land for rides.
Many of the other leaders
echoed the same feelings,
statins that people in the
area had shown a general
interest and concern for the
young people and often of
fered their help.
As always however„not all
residents were happy with
young horsemen in the area
as evidenced in a talk with
Mrs. Nancy Jenkins, a
leader 'in the Conestoga
Crusaders.
“Although most people

she explained.
“But, many people just
weren’t interested enough to
make any comments.”
When asked what the main
purpose of the 4-H Horse
Clubs was, many of the
leaders responded in a like
manner.

Mrs. Rose Fellenbaum, a
leader of the Sequoia Riders,
explained it in this manner,
“the horse clubs bring
together young people who
are interested in horses.”
"We try to promote good
riding and try to teach
members correct methods in
riding.”
Nancy Jenkins from the
Conestoga group explained it
in somewhat different
manner.
"So many of the children
in this area had ponies that
were Just standing in the
barn and fields because they
were afriad of them and did
not know how to ride.”
“We thought it would be
good to teach them the
correct riding methods and
how to properly care for
their animals.”
“The children work hard
every day, because they
know that something is
depending on them,” Mrs.
Joseph Godmauer, leader in
the Silver Spurs Club stated.
“Horse Clubs teach
youngsters responsibility
and how to care and properly
manage animals,” she
added. '
Along with teaching the
youngsters responsibility,
and how to care for their
horse properly, the horse
clubs offer the opportunity
for competitive activities
encourages sportsmanship
as well as self-development.
As in any 4-H club, a great
deal of the work and plan
ning depends on the leaders
and teen leaders. Many of
the leaders have shown their
interest by serving for many

Horse Clubs.
And although many
confess that it takes “con
ditioning” for 3-day trail
rides and humor when called
on to sleep in sleeping bags
and eat food cooked over the
coals, most of the leaders
agree that it is well worth
their time and efforts.
On December 7th, the 4-H
Horse Clubs of the county
will hold their first annual
recognition banquet at the
Farm and Home Center.
Mrs. Joseph Gochnauer,
the program chairman,
explained how the banquet
came into being.
“We were interested in
recognizing those young
people, parents and leaders
how they had been active in
the County horse clubs.”
“The leaders from all the
clubs decided to have a
recognition banquet
honoring the members and
leaders who contributed to
the program throughout the
year.”
Jay Irwin further ex
plained the program by
relating that it will be the
first time that many young
people from the different
clubs will be recognized for
heir activities.
“We are planning awards
that include perfect at
tendance, outstanding teen
leadership and first year
member achievement.”
The banquet will be held at
the Farm and Home Center.
Master of Ceremonies for the
event will be James
Gallagher, the extension
horse specialist from Penn
State.
