    Gypsy Moth Still A Threat
Although defoliation by the
leaf-eating gypsy moth was
down a dramatic 44 percent
in Pennsylvania this year, an
official of the U.S. Depart
ment of Agriculture’s
(USDA) Animal and Plant
Health Inspection Service
cautioned residents that the
pest is still a serious threat to
the state’s woodlands.
Edgar D. Eckess, the State
Supervisor for the USDA’s
Plant Protection and
Quarantine Programs in
University Park, pointed
out: “Gypsy moth
populations have followed a
cycle in the older infested
areas of New York State and
New England. History shows
moth populations increasing
over vast areas for several
years, then collapsing

“A naturally occurring
virus disease of the cater

cause of this year’s gypsy

he remarked. “Un
fortunately, researchers
have not yet pinpointed the
complex factors which
trigger this disease. When
we have this knowledge, we
may be able to build a truly

which will prevent damaging

moth quarantines , are
designed to halt the spread of
the insect by man into non
nested areas. As such, they
require that certain
products, such as trees,
shrubs and timber, be
certified as gypsy moth free
before they can be moved out
of any of the 33 generally
infested counties in the
eastern and central part of
the state.
USDA, as well as private
organizations, have also
conducted extensive trap
ping programs to gauge the
pest’s population and
proliferation. The Penn
sylvania Department of
Environmental Resources
conducts aerial surveys
throughout the state to
determine the extent and
severity of defoliation.
This past summer the
gypsy moth defoliated'
479,590 acres in Penn
sylvania compared to 856,710
in 1973. In the Northeast, the
insect damaged 750,905 acres
in seven states. In 1973, the
destruction involved
1,777,406 acres in nine states.
Maine and Massachusetts
were the only two states to
report increases this year,
whereas no defoliation oc
curred in New Hampshire or
Vermont.
The gypsy moth was
brought into this country in
1869 for a scientific ex
periment, but accidentally
escaped. Since 1970, the pest
has been in outbreak status
in the generally infested
northeast. An isolated in
festation has been detected
in central Michigan.
Gypsy moths can damage
and kill many types of
hardwood trees, such as
birch and oak. Evergreens
can die after one defoliation.

NUTRITION A LA CARTE
For a really different
breakfast dish, try serving
hot wheat cereal with a
small scoop of ice cream and
a little maple syrup. The
flavor combination is
delicious. Replace toast now
and then with buttered
English muffins, or coffee
cake. And for a good winter
beverage, serve piping hot
chocolate milk.
All people, throughout life,
need the same nutrients. But
the amounts they need vary
with age and activity. Your
best bet is to eat a wide
variety of foods chosen from
the four food groups-the
meat-fish-poultry-egg group,
the milk and dairy foods
group, vegetables and fruits,
breads and cereals. And
keep your weight down.
Here are some dollar
stretching ideas for your
food budget: Serve macaroni
and cheese as your main
dish, and add bits of leftover
green vegetables, or meat,
or hard-cooked egg. Or buy
less expensive cuts of meat.
Then cook them slowly,
using some liquid in the pan
as you would for a pot roast.
They’ll come out delicious.
We all need protein every
day to build and repair our
body tissues. It also helps to
make blood and fight in

What have winter sports to
do with nutrition? It’s simply
a matter of whether you’re
going to be active or not. It’s
easy in winter to just sit
around keeping warm and to
eat the same as when you
were more active in warmer
weather. Instead, get out of
doors and enjoy win
tersports. You’ll feel better,
and enjoy your meals more.
And you’ll be less likely to
gain weight
