First it was garlic in the wheat crop; then what seemed like large discounts for high*moisture corn, accentuated by inflated market prices. Now the rub may come with immature, green soybeans brought on by a dry, cool fall and unusually early frosts, observes Joseph L. Newcomer, Extension agronomist at the University of Maryland In College Park. Killing frosts set new record-early dates in some parts of the state on Sept. 24, and a big freeze in early October halted growth of June-planted soybeans on the Eastern Shore and elsewhere, which had escaped the earlier frosts, Newcomer reported. These frost damaged soybeans are still worth harvesting, NfWcomer notes. But har vesting operations will have to be delayed in some fields to give the beans a chance to dry out. As a fair-pricing guideline for both growers and grain buyers at marketing time, the Maryland Extension specialist cites agricultural research results from the University of Illinois. The Illinois research indicates that oil and protein content of immature soybeans will be at satisfactory levels as long as the seeds being harvested are at least 35 percent as heavy a normal sized, mature seed of the same variety. Auctioneers Galena, Md. (301) 648-5100 or 648-517? nite phone 778-0804 Newcomer further ad monishes soybean buyers not to be confused on grade designations .when buying immature, green soybeans whose development has been halted by frost. He reminds inexperienced graders that there are separate grade classes for yellow, green, black and brown varieties of soybeans, as well as a separate class for mixed soybeans which do not meet the standards for the variety d asses. Soybeans that are green and immature because of early frost should not be confused in the grading classification with green varieties, he emphasized. Buyers should consult official federal or state grain graders to determine proper -and fair-dockage for frost damaged soybeans. Far mers who feel that their soybeans are not being graded properly can request that a sample be taken and sent for official grading by federal or state grain graders, Newcomer com mented. Additional information is available in an article titled “Soybeans and an Early Frost,” which Newcomer has written for the November issue of The Agronomist, a monthly newsletter published by the agronomy department in the College of Agriculture at the University of Maryland. Copies will be available shortly at county Extension offices. If// . •••', / ' People once believed that itones from an eagle’s nest could help them detect thieves.
