University. Topics of the
program will be of special

winemakers.
Professor Vernon
Singleton of The Department
of Viticulture and Enology,
University of California,
Davis, California, will be the
featured banquet speaker.
Dr. Singleton is noted for his
research concerned with

banquet address Professor
Singleton, during the regular
session, will present a paper
on protein stability in wines.
Topics of interest to
viticulturists include an in
depth presentation on
mechanical harvesting of
wine grapes. Mr. Gilbert
Smith of Taylor Wine
Company will make this
presentation. Mr. Smith for
many years was the grape
extension specialist in the
Finger Lakes area of New
York State.
Establishment of prices
for wine grapes is an area of
particular interest to the
newly formed wineries and
vineyards in Pennsylvania.
Messers. R. K. Matthie,
Managing Secretary of the
Ontario Grape Growers
Marketing Board, and
Seaton C. Mendall of Taylor
Wine Company will be
featured in this aspect of the
program.
Professors Thomas Stock
dale and Clinton R.
Studholme, Wild Life
Management Specialists at
Ohio State University and
Penn State University,
respectively, will give an in
depth presentation with
respect to the legal and
practical aspects of bird
control in vineyards. Dr.
Gerald L, Jubb, Jr. also will
present information
collected with respect to
species of birds attacking
grapes in Erie county area of
Pennsylvania. Dr. Jubb is
research grape entomologist
at Penn State’s Erie County
Field Research Laboratory
located in North East, Pa.
Dr. Jubb also will discuss
grape insects pests in
Pennsylvania vineyards.
Mr. P. Blair McCord,
President of Penn Shore
Winery and a wine grape
grower himself, will present
his experiences in con
trolling loss due to birds in
his vineyards.
Dr. Carl W. Haeseler,
Associate Professor of
Pomology at Penn State’s
Erie County Field Research
Laboratory in North East,
Pa. will discuss principles
and practices of weed
control in the vineyard. Dr.
Cyril B. Smith, Professor of
Plant Nutrition at Penn State
will describe the technique
for sampling grape vines for
plant analysis and the
characteristics of an ideal
vineyard soil will be
discussed in detail, by Dr.
Roy P. Matelski, Professor
of Soil Genesis and Mor
phology at Penn State
University. Mr. Thomas
Obourn, Erie County
Agricultural Extension
Agent, will outline the
operations in the vineyard
and the time normally
required to complete these
management steps.
From the enologists
standpoint Dr. Andrew Rice
will be concerned with the
use of hot pressing in red
wine production. Dr. Rice is
the Director of Research at

“Carbonique Maceration" in
red wine production. He also
will discuss information be

Two special aspects that
will be new to this year’s
program are that several
vineyard and wine
technology companies will
display information about
their products at the wine
conference. Also, there will
be a brief discussion and
explanation about the for
mation of the southeast
Pennsylvania Grape and
Wine Association.
As in the past, there will be
a banquet held on Thursday
evening preceded by a wine
tasting session.
