Kathy Elaine Bicksler was crowned the 1974-75
Pennsylvania Poultry Queen at the State’s annual

Martin Named
Extension Specialist
Kenneth M. Martin has
been temporarily appointed
to The Pennsylvania State
University’s Cooperative
Extension Service staff as a
community development
specialist and instructor in
rural sociology, effective
November 1.
Dr. Thomas B. King, Penn
State associate dean for
extension, pointed out that
Martin will conduct
educational programs under
Title V of the Rural
Development Act of 1972 in
Indiana, Armstrong, and
Butler counties. His office is
located in the Indiana
County Cooperative Ex
tension Service Office,
Courthouse, Indiana.
“Title V of the Rural
Development Act provides
monies for educational
activities to supplement
local citizen efforts to
identify rural and com
munity development
priorities,” Dr. King said.
“It also is designed to
provide the framework to
develop consensus and
implement action.”
A native of Lancaster
County, Martin earned two
degrees from Penn State; a
bachelor of science in
agricultural economics in
1971 and master of science in
rural sociology in 1973. He is
currently working on a
doctor of philosophy degree
at Penn State.
Prior to being named
Extension community
development specialist, he
was employed as a farmer
and auctioneer; a com
munity development

volunteer in Honduras; and
a graduate research
assistant at Penn State.
Martin is a member of
numerous societies and
fraternities including Alpha
Kappa Delta, Gamma Sigma
Pretty and vivacious,
Kathy Elaine Bicksler, was
crowned as the 1974*75
Pennsylvania Poultry Queen
at the state’s annual pageant
held at the Hershey Motor
Lodge on November Ist.
Kathy, who represented
Lebanon County, was
selected from three other
contestants to serve as a
spokesperson and liason for
the Pennsylvania Poultry
Federation throughout the
coming year.
Kathy has learned about
the poultry industry in
Pennsylvania first hand by
working summers and on
vacations at the College Hill
Poultry Company near
Fredericksburg.
As a sophomore at the
Schuylkill Campus of the
Pennsylvania State
University, Kathy has been
active in the Cultural Affairs
Committee, the Keystone
Honor Society and as a
dormitory counselor. While
in high school she was a
member of the district band
and participated in the
Ecology Club and the
Student Action for
Education. Kathy has also
taken an interest in the youth
work of her church serving
Delta, Alpha Zeta, American
Sociological Association,
Rural Sociological Society,
and Community Develop
ment Society.
He is married to the for
mer Yvonne E. Martin,
daughter of the Reverend
and Mrs. Nelson L. Martin,
of RIM, Greencastle. His
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron
H. Martin, reside at RDI,
Denver.

Kathy’s father is employed
as a truck driver for the
College Hill Poultry Com
pany and the family lives
near Fredericksburg.
Kathy related that she was
asked to try out for the
Lebanon County Poultry
Queen Contest by a friend
and did not expect it to go
further than that.
“I’m really excited about
being chosen to represent the

She is a student at
Susquehanna University
enrolled in the psychology
major.
Other contestants vying
for the title were Michele
Melhorn of Lancaster
County and Jane Waybright
of Adams County.

evening’s activities was
John D. Hoffman, president
of the Pennsylvania Poultry
Federation, with special
talks being given by Vernon
Leininger and Kathy Early
the 1974 Poultry Queen.
Judges for the event were
