In contrast to sporting
events winning isn’t the
important reason for having
judging contests. Winning or
placing in the top ten is only
an incentive to encourage
enthusiasm in the
educational process, in
volved in the livestock and
dairy judging contest.
If winning or competition
isn’t the reason for having
livestock and dairy judging
contests then what are the
reasons?
The real purpose can be
found right at the grass root
level or the farm. For a
farmer to be a good
manager, he must be able to
select good animals which
will be profitable for him to
produce.
To be able to do this he will
hjve to be able to identify
various qualities and
characteristics which good
animals should possess.
In training students to
participate in contests we
are teaching them to identify
various qualities and
characteristics of animals.
This knowledge is put into
practical experience then in
the form of judging contests
where students have the
opportunity to compare
animals and select the better
animals. This skill can easily
be applied on the students
own farming experiences
where they learn to cuU or
keep certain animals.
A practical learning ex
perience for students then is
the true purpose of the
judging contest. They allow
students to gain valuable
knowledge while par
ticipating in a contest.
