of the largest shipment in
breed history ever to be
imported in North America -
50 females from ten to 24
months of age and six bulls
up to two years of age.
Beef Genetics Research,
Inc. of Mankato, Kansas,
brought in these Beef
Friesians from the three
leading herds of the Republic
of Ireland. For although the
original Friesian cattle
originated in the
Netherlands and have been
noted world-wide for their
piilk production, the Irish
have bred them up as a dual
purpose breed much of the
past half-century.
The result is, according to

Inc., cattle that are growthy,

However, the Beef
Friesians start out life
relatively small, at an
average weight of less than
80 pounds at birth. In the
same area of Ireland the
typical Fleckvieh calf
weighs 80 to 90 pounds at
birth and the French
Charolais 105 pounds.
Until they were in the
quarantine station these
cattle had never eaten grain,
and didn’t know what it was,
to the consternation of

Drapes and Electric Heaters
Following are some safety
guidelines that allow maximum
efficiency in the operation of all
types of electric baseboard heat
ers— with a minimum influence
on draperies.
Hang drapes so that when
in use they extend below the
centerline of the heater, but with
at least one-half inch clearance
from the top of the finished floor
covering (such as a carpet).
There should be at least one
inch between the extreme front
of the heater and the nearest fold
of the drapes in the folded back
(opened drape) position.
—Leave one-half inch between
the top of the drapes and the
ceiling.
Draperies located close to
heaters should be of material that
will not discolor nor distort di
mensionally (shrink or stretch)
upon extended exposure (1000
hours) to a temperature of 200 F
When cutting off drapes
above a heater do so by at least
six inches

3,000 Beef Friesian cattle in
the USA now. Beef Genetics
Research, Inc. imported
semen last year from a
German Friesian that was
an Irish stud. The calves
were so impressive it was
decided to import a large
number of Beef Friesians.
Another reason for the
“new” breed’s growing
popularity, according to
Beef Genetics Research,
Inc., is that their color is
ideal for crossing on our
domestic cattle. A Beef
Friesian bred to an Angus
produces a black calf. Bred
to a Hereford the calf is a
black-baldie.
The result, according to
Beef Genetics Research,
Inc., is commercially ac
ceptable cattle that gain well
and that have little calving
trouble.

National Beef Friesian Sale
in Denver, Colorado, this
coining January 10.
