For the past five years, Mike has either had the reserve grand champion or the grand champion hog in the county 4-H and FFA contests, which says much for this ability in selecting animals. As a first year exhibitor at the Eastern National Show in Timonium, Md., Mike had the grand champion barrow in the junior class that went on to be the grand champion overall at the show in April of this year. One of the most important awards that Mike has won however has been the James V. Martin Swine Achievement Award. Mike was particulary proud of the award since it represented achievement in the field of swine production and work. Mike decided that he wanted to keep working in the area of swine management after he graduated from Warwick High School in 1973. Since that time he has worked on a ranch in Nebraska and is now a herdsman for Mark Nestleroth. Mike isn’t sure just what he will do in the future but he expressed an interest in continuing to do farm related work. When asked what helped him decide on a career he FHILIPSBURG 307 Alder St WHITE DEER Route 15 Mike Grube displays some of the trophies he has won for livestock judging and market hogs. responded by saying that 4-H work and his FFA activities had meant a lot to him. “I appreciate so much what I learned in 4-H and FFA work," Mike explained. “At the time it seemed like it was too much practicing for the judging team and the activities but it has paid off.” Mike was busy this past week for once again he was exhibiting his hogs at the Ephrata fair and his judgement in livestock paid off as he took home the grand champion hog prize.
