buy, if you can use them as
they are, remodel slightly or
use the fabric to make
something else. Mrs. Ruth
Ann Wilson, Extension
clothing and textiles
specialist at The Penn
sylvania State University,
points out that in some areas
of the state there are small
shops specializing in han
dling used clothing. People
who have clothing they no
longer need can leave it at
the store. The store will then
try to sell the articles and the
former owner receives a
portion of the sale price.
In addition, there are other
kinds of used clothing stores,
many of which are run by
charitable organizations. If
you’re buying used clothing,
look at specific aspects of the
garments before you buy for
use as is, cautions Mrs.
Wilson.
The fabric should be
holding up will at points of
wear, such as the knees,
elbows, and the seat. The
stitching on the fabric should
be strong. And for children’s
clothes to stay together,
stitching should be small and
firm. Elastic needs to have
good stretch. Zippers need to
be in good working order.
Buttonholes shouldn’t be
raveling and buttons should
be attached.
The style of the garment
should not be so out-of-date
that you or a child will feel
