Swine Proposal Withdrawn
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA)
recently announced it is
withdrawing its proposal to
require uniform iden
tification of all swine shipped
across state lines.
Officials of USDA’s
Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service i APHIS)
said, on the basis of all
comments received* it is
apparent that it would not be
feasible to effectively im
plement the proposed
regulations. Therefore, the
Department has decided to
take no further action on this
proposal.
The identification plan was
proposed in early May
(USDA Press Release No.
1303-74), and a period of 90
days was allowed for in
terested persons to submit
comments Over 9,300
comments were received
with approximately three
fourths of the comments
opposing the proposal.
USDA officials said they
still believe an acceptable
swine identification program
would be of much benefit to
swine health programs.
Also, many of the comments
received—including a
number from persons op
posed to the May proposal
showed support for an
identification system that

indicated that work on an
acceptable system will
continue in consultation with
state and industry leaders.
