buying his horses on his own.
Area banks went along with
Keith and helped him to
financially purchase his first
mare.
Keith has also earned
some funds and experience
by working at the Kar-Run
Saddle and Tack Shop in
Blue Ball.
“I wait on customers and
also help keep the store in
stock,” he explained.
Keith would like to keep
working with his horses after
he graduates and hopefully
obtain more animals in the
future.
Keith’s dedication and
time he spends working with
his horses is evident in the
many ribbons and trophies
that he has collected over the
past few years. Besides
being in Appaloosa shows he
has also exhibited at the
Keystone International
Livestock Exposition and at
the Manheim Fair.
Although he is back in
school now, Keith still has
one more show he is
preparing for and that is the
Indian Valley Appaloosa
Association Show in late
September. Keith is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. George

Tighter Shipping Rules
To Combat Brucellosis
As part of the current
national effort to eradicate
brucellosis in livestock, the
U. S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) has
proposed a tightening of
animal health regulations
covering the interstate
movement of cattle.
Brucellosis is a contagious
bacterial disease of cattle,
swine and other livestock
that also affects humans.
Cattle losses from the
disease are manifested by
premature calves, impaired
reproductive capacity, and
reduced milk production. In
people, the disease is called
undulant fever and causes
persistant symptoms
somewhat resembling in
fluenza.
Of the more significant
changes proposed, one would
require breeding cattle to be
tested for brucellosis before
or immediately after they
were moved interstate from
areas or herds lacking
Certified Brucellosis-Free
designation.
Another would require
cattle found exposed to
brucellosis to be heat
branded on the left jaw with
the letter “S,” before they
were sold for slaughter.
Dr. Paul Becton, recently
named director of
brucellosis eradication for
USDA’s Animal and Plant
Health Inspection Service
(APHIS), said the proposed
changes also would help
protect the 99 percent of U. S.
cattle already free of
brucellosis and would aid
state and federal authorities
working with livestock
producers to eliminate the
disease in areas still heavily
infected.
According to Dr. Becton,

the proposed provision on
testing prior to animal
movement would bring In
terstate shipping rules into
line with the “Recom
mended Uniform Methods
and Rules.” These are the
minimum standards
required for states par
ticipating in the cooperative
state-federal eradication
campaign.
Other proposed revisions
to the regulations would;
-Provide for movement of
calves less than six months
old from infected herds.
-Define certain terms or
designations such as
“brucellosis exposed
animal.”
-Eliminate the provision
for reshipment of pure bred
cattle found infected,
because it is no longer
necessary.
-Provide for the
movement of cattle
originating in Certified
Brucellosis-Free Areas
when they are accompanied
by a waybill or owner’s
statement.
-Provide for moving cattle
from “qualified” herds in
