“Many animals are alreadj
going to market straight
from grass,” he said.
In the past five years
Moore pointed out, the nation
has increased its cattle herd
by 18 percent because
producers held back heifers
and older cows in order to
get their calves. “We could
increase slaughter by 10
percent for three straight
years and still not stop herd
growth,” Moore said. “So it
looks like we’re going to
have lots and lots of cattle to
sell.”
On the plus side, Moore
siad that per capita beef
consumption in the first six
months of 1974 was running
four pounds over the figures
for the same period in 1973.
And beef imports were down
23 percent last year, mostly
because American beef
prices were comparatively
lower than prices in other
parts of the world.
Moore said he expects the
price spread between fed
steers and feeders to widen
from its present figure.
Feeders are now about 32-
cents while fed steers are 46-
cents. “But,” he added, “I
fugure that retail prices will
have to be up around $1.25
just to pay you for the corn
you’ll have to buy to put into
the steers.”
' In reply to a question from
a fanner in the audience
Moore said, “If I had lOC
acres of good com and ar,
empty feedlot, I’d sell the
com and keep the feedlot
empty.”
About hogs, Moore said
that the hog-com price ratio
now is very unfavorable and
looks like it’s getting worse
He said the hog inventory
cutback has already begun
which will depress supplies.
But that won’t show up in
any significant price im
provements for farmers
until 1975.
“Right now," he said, “it
looks like selling you com is
a better alternative than
feeding it.”
