Station, Urbana) USDA’s
Agricultural Research
Service (ARS) administers
the laboratory.
One puzzle the ARS
scientists are tackling is
how to make more nitrogen
available to soybean plants.
About 400 pounds of nitrogen
are needed to produce a 70
bushel per acre soybean crop
and the scientists are
seeking ways to make this
nitrogen more available,
either through fertilizer
nitrogen or more efficient
strains of root nodule bac
teria which take nitrogen
from the air and convert it to
a form that soybean plants
can use.
Other problems con
fronting the scientists in
clude discovering why
soybeans that lodge have a
lower yield than those that
don’t. Soybean breeders are
working to develop semi
dwarf varieties that will be
high-yielding, as well as
resistant to lodging, diseases
and pests.
A long-term project is
being conducted to find the
effects of crop rotation and
herbicide treatment upon

Dr. Robert W, Rinne cultures soybean tissues in
solutions containing radioactive compounds. He
follows the pathways these compounds take in the
growing tissue to study how the plant produces
protein and oil. This information is used to develop
new soybean varieties with desired levels of protein
and oil.
9:30 A.M,
weed seed population in the
soil and upon soybean yields.
Developing a control method
for yellow nutsedge, which is
becoming a major weed
problem in soybeans, is also
a primary objective.
Soybeans do not use
sunlight efficiently. If
scientists can find a way to
improve their efficiency.

yields could theoretically
increase by SO percent.
Developing varieties with
more oil and protein and
finding ways to cut harvest
losses are other research
areas that the ARS scientists
are exploring.
Research will provide the
know-how for farmers to get
higher soybean yields, which
will help maintain a steady -
and growing supply to meet
world demands for the
protein-rich soybean.
