Counties
Cooperative U. S.
Department of Agriclulture
(USDA) and state surveys
have turned up additional
European alfalfa beetle
outbreaks in new Penn
sylvania and New Jersey
counties-and, for the first
time, in the state of
Maryland.
Officials of USDA’s
Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service (APHIS)
point out that-although the
beetle is known to be very
destructive to alfalfa,
legume forage and car
nations in Europe-it has not
been found attacking
economically important
crops here. Instead, the
foreign insects have been
found only on common
roadside plants such as
bouncing bet, tall out grass,
white campion and milk
weed.
To date, the beetles have
been found in Beaver, Berks,
Bucks, Cumberland,
Dauphin, Franklin, Lan
caster, Lawrence, Lebanon,
Lehigh, Mercer, Mon
tgomery, Northampton,
Philadelphia and Schuykill
counties in Pennsylvania;
Bergen, Hudson, Hunterdon,
Moms and Warren counties
in New Jersey; and
Washington county in
Maryland. Officials say the
number of discoveries in
dicates that the beetle has
been in the U. S. for some
time.

surveys are complete in New
Jersey but scouting is
continuing in Pennsylvania
and Maryland where more
infested counties may be
found. Nearly all the
discoveries are associated
with railroad tracks and
railroad yards. Officials feel
that moving railroad cars
have been the beetle’s
method of spreading through
the three-state area.
