Rodney Martin
Wins Prize Calf
at Holstein Day
Over 360 people attended
the annual Holstein Field
Day held at the farm of
Galen Crouse, RDI Stevens.
Highlight of the day was
the presentation of a junior
Holstein calf to Rodney S.
Martin, ROl, Millersville,
son of John Martin, Jr.
Martin was one of 78
youngsters who registered
the calf which was
awarded by drawing. To be
eligible the young person
must be willing to show the
animal as a 4-H or FFA
project animal. Eight-year
old Martin says he will join 4-
H, and was obviously
pleased at the prospect of
raising the calf. The calf was
purcahsed by the Holstein
Club from Sunnycraft
Farms, Clarence and Earl
Stauffer, Ephrata. Paul
Welk, chairman of the youth
committee, made the
presentation.

Micheal Young, director of
programs for the Penn
sylvania Holstein
Association, explained the
division of responsibilities
among staff members of the
state association, and he
thanked Lancaster county
for its continued support of
the export program. He said,
“Pennsylvania is the export
center of Holsteins going to
Europe,” adding that more
animals were sent abroad
from Lancaster County in
one two-month period than
from two neighboring states.
He also discussed some of
the reasons for continuing
exporting such great
numbers of Holsteins to
Europe, saying, “We are
building better relations
through agriculture.” He
explained the European way
of raising animals for both
milk and meat corn
sumption, and said a large
percentage of their milk is
used in cheese and
manufactured dairy
products because of the
relatively inefficient tran
sportation available for the
fresh product.
He encouraged everyone
to be on some kind to official
testing to improve the value
of their animals, and told
breeders they should always
ask to check registration
papers before signing the
check for animals they have
purchased.
Young announced that
Lancaster county is the first
club in the state to go over
600 members, as this county
did in 1974. He said, “The

1974 Dairy Princess Diane
Crider, Nottingham, spoke to
the dairymen about just why
milk is important to each
person, calling it the one food
that is “custom-made” to fit
our bodies. She said it is a
matter of good health, good
ecology, good economics and
pure enjoyment to drink
milk. She concluded by
saying, “Milk is truly one of
God’s greatest miracles.”
N. Alan Bair, Associate
County Extension Agent
spoke briefly to the
dairymen on the importants
