Farm Trends (Continued from Page 1| little from last season.'Use of fire cured and cigar wrapper is steadying, while use of domestic cigar filler tobacco is declining. Nevertheless, estimated use for most of these types of tobacco will exceed last year’s crops, leaving less carryover into 1974-75. Tentative 1974-75 supplies are lower than the previous season for fire-cured, dark air-cured, cigar filler and wrapper, but about the same for binder tobaccos. DRW —An Active Issue for Poultry Feeders Although the Food and Drug Administration has not yet announced a decision on the use of dehydrated poultry waste (DRW) as a feed ingredient, California has announ9ed proposed standards for use. A recent USDA report concluded processing and feeding of dried layer waste is economically feasible for operations of 50,000 or more caged layers. A New Jersey publication indicated a 30,000 bird operation could pay for. the drying equipment needed in 2-3 years with DRW selling at $125 a ton for fer tilizer or worth $B5 a ton if fed to chickens. California producers have successfully used natural drying methods to reduce moisture below 30 percent in 1-5 days, making it an easy-to-handle fertilizer. r i New Idea’s Superpickers In the cornpicker race Superpickers finish first and first. Recently, the item said, there have been a number of responses - not the least of which was to continue selling fertilizer to U.S. farmers, thus resisting the temptation to sell at higher prices overseas. This was pointed up recently by the Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Herman Talmadge, who commended Gold Kist, the supply coop serving his home state of Georgia, for continuing to serve farmers’ fertilizer needs while many com- panies were pulling out of the market and selling at higher prices overseas. “What Gold Kist did wasn't an isolated example. It has been duplicated many times over the past year by cooperative suppliers of fuel and fertilizers. And it will continue as long as farmers need production inputs, and consumers need food," says Kenneth D. Naden, president of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives. Butz Says Canners Can’t Can Without Cans Steel company executives were told in a letter from U.S Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz that canneries, especially on the West Coast, are going to have problems unless the steel companies increase sup plies of tinplate. The can shortage is especially acute in California, Butz said. Until this year, California canners imported 25 percent of their tinplate from Japan, but this year, Japan has cut back on these shipments. Enough cans will probably be available for the peach crop, which will be put up in the next few months. But tomato canning will run into the fall, and this is the crop that would be most seriously affected by a can shortage.
