Secretary Jim McHale and
Herbert J. Waters, chairman
of the World Hunger Action
Coalition.
Shapp and Percy are
scheduled to meet again with
Martin June 18 to present
recommendations to
stabilize world agricultural
prices, which then would be
considered at the Rome
conference.
McHale will participate in
a Midwest Conference on
Food Policy at St. Paul,
Minn., June 6-7, sponsored
by the Minnesota Farmers
Union and the Minnesota
AFL-CIO in cooperation with
the World Hunger Action
Coalition. This conference
will also strive to develop
recommendations for the
Rome conference.
The Coalition has viewed
with alarm the fact that the
world now has only 27 days
worth of grain reserves. Fuel
and fertilizer, key
ingredients for agricultural
production, have ex
perienced a four-fold in
crease in price in the last two
years, placing them beyond
reach of many of the poorer
countries of the world.
At the May 30 meeting,
Shapp stressed that it was
important to inform the
American people that food
stockpiles can be built
around the world without
incurring severe shortages
and inflation at home.
“After the Russian wheat
deal,” said Shapp, “the
American people may un
derstandably tend to oppose
any effort to feed the world.”
The governor said the
world conference should
back the establishment of
grain reserves throughout
the world. The United States,
as a major grain producing
country, would have to be
counted on as a key grain
reserve center.
“Our main problem,” said
Shapp, “is to find a better
and more efficient way to
distribute food.” He noted
that mid-western granaries
may overflow from a record
harvest while millions may
starve because of inadequate
distribution.

Some Dental Patients Suffer
From "Preventaphobia"
“Preventaphobia” may well
become a new word in dental
circlet. It refers to patients
who may cringe at the pros
pect of brushing their teeth
and “flossing” them because
tooth care can be a painful
procedure for them. These
are individuals who suffer
from overly-sensitive teeth.
Persons with hypersensitive
teeth experience pain rang
ing from a slight “twinge”
to severe pain. One or more
teeth may be affected. Den
tal hypersensitivity is often
related to exposed tooth
dentin and cementum, the
tooth structure under the en
amel and gums, but also to
some extent to an individual’s
threshhold of pain, and per
haps also to emotional and
psychic factors-often a con
sequence of suffering from
the condition.
Although treatment for it
used to involve many visits
to a dentist’s office, recent
methods include home care
and proper toothbrushing
but with a “therapeutic”
toothpaste and toothbrush.
Dentists often recommend a
toothpaste containing a non
toxic strontium chloride and
a toothbrush with extra-soft
bristles. Commercially both
are available under the name
of Sensodyne.
The governor said that it
was vitally necessary to
achieve stabilization of the
world’s food supply. In good
years, grains reserves can
be built up and withheld
from breaking farm prices.
In bad years, grains can be
sold at equitable farm
prices.
Shapp said the U.S. should
establish a program of low
cost loans to underdeveloped
countries so that we can
export our surplus grains to
the parts of the world
threatened with starvation.
Martin said a chief con
cern of the United States at
the World Food Conference
will be to encourage food
production and stockpiling in
developing nations.
