McHaie said information gathered from the 15 sex attractant traps will be sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s research unit which is investigating the European corn borer, a caterpillar that attacks ears and stems of field and sweet com. McHaie said his depart ment is also cooperating with USDA on a study of the cereal leaf beetle, a pest of spring grains such as wheat, oats and barley. Henry F. Nixon, director of the Bureau of Plant In dustry, explained that both pests are native to Europe and were accidentally in troduced into North America. European corn borer work is being done in cooperation with the USDA’s Corn Borer Research Unit at Ankeny, lowa. Nixon said the object of the 1974 study is to determine whether male com borer moths in various regions respond to different sex attractants of the female moths. In the Perry County ex periment, Nixon explained that the number of male moths attracted to different combinations of sex' at tractant chemicals will be recorded twice each week. “This information will be useful in setting up traps used to monitor com borer populations,” said Nixon. “Researchers and growers will then be able to know IMPORTANT NOTICE Lancaster Ford Tractor, Inc. 1655 ROHRERSTOWN ROAD NEW Members of the Solanco FFA Parliamentary Procedure team which finished second in the regional procedure contest at Lehigh Valley Community College are: seated (left to right) Marshall Trimble, sentinel; Gordon Herr, president; Randy Clark, vice president: and Glenn when moths are first present, permitting a timely application of insecticides.” the cereal leaf beetle project is being done in cooperation with the USDA’s Cereal Leaf Beetle Rearing Laboratory at Niles, Michigan. “This project,” -Nixon said, “is to determine the distribution of a tiny wasp that was introduced in several western Penn sylvania counties to feed on cereal leaf beetle eggs.
