Shutdown Of
Rail Lines in N£
The NEPPCO Board of
Directors went on record
officially last week as op
posing any and all aban
donment of rail lines in the
Northeast as proposed in the
recent report of U. S.
Secretary of Transportation,
Claude Brinegar. Mr.
Brinegar’s report, issued
pursuant to the Regional
Rail Reorganization Act of
1973, called for abandonment
of 8,300 miles of “potentially
excess rail lines” in the 14-
state NEPPCO area.
It was. pointed out by the
NEPPCO Board that much if
not all of the trackage slated
for abandonment could be
profitable to the railroads if
they geared up with the
times, operated efficiently,
and provided the service
needed by industries located
on such trackage. Over the
years, these industries
diverted much of their
freight business to trucks out
of sheer necessity because
the railroads did not provide
cars and related service
when needed.
The NEPPCO Board also
voted unanimously to join
the National Broiler Council
and other poultry and meat
organizations as plaintiffs in
a suit to be filed in U. S.
District Court against the
Federal Labor Relations
Council. The suit seeks in
junction and relief from the
FLRC’s rulling that the days
to be included in the basic
workweek for inspectors of
poultry and meat as well as
shift starting times are
issues subject to negotiation
between USDA and the labor
union (AFGE) representing
its inspectors.
The suit contends that such
action would be excessively
costly and burdensome to
processors, costly to con
sumers and contrary to the

Following reports by

Drive for the American Egg
Board and Henk Wentink,

the following resolution to
express to aU concerned the
views of the Council con
cerning the use of the funds
collected and the importance
it attaches to the current
activities of the National

“Whereas the Nor
theastern Poultry Producers
Council was instrumental in
soliciting funds for a positive
national advertising and
promotional program for
eggs and egg products, and
“Whereas the NEPPCO
Board of Directors are of the
opinion that any action taken
to correct the widespread
misconception regarding the
role of cholesterol and fatty
acids in human nutrition and
health must be considered
very positive advertising
and promotion,
“TTierefore, be it resolved
that the Northeastern
Poultry Producers Council
favors the use of such of
these funds as may be
necessary to continue this
corrective action; and
further that NEPPCO
supports the solicitation of
additional funds if needed.”
In other action, the Board
(1) voted to affiliate with the
Poultry & Egg Institute of
America in order to acquire
a more direct pipeline to
Washington happenings,
