Scientists Will
Spray For Oak
Leaf Infestation
This summer the lure of sex may prove the final undoing of
a moth whose larvae have defoliated and destroyed over 70
million dollars worth of oak trees in Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, New York, West Virginia, Michigan and Ohio.
Chemists and entomologists at The Pennsylvania State
University will begin limited spraying of oak leaf roller in
fested areas in northwestern Pennsylvania with an ar
tifically prepared component of the female moth’s sexual
attractant. The scientists expect the lure to confuse the
male moths so that mating will not occur and the population
will be depleted.
The spraying program is the first major field test of the
artificial compound (cis-10-tetradecenyl acetate) recently
synthesized for the first time by Lawrence Hendry, assistant
professor of chemistry, graduate student John Jugovich, and
Ralph 0. Mumma of the department of entomology.
The approach promises to be safe and inexpensive. Hendry
says the compound is non-toxic and highly specific, at
tracting only male oak leaf rollers and a few other insects of
the same genus including some fruit tree pests. He estimates
that it costs $6OO to synthesize 1,000 grams of the compound or
enough to control the pest on 200 acres of forest land. In
addition, he feels confident that industry will be able to mass
produce the compound even more economically.
Small-scale preliminary field tests last summer showed
the compound to be extraordinarily effective in very small
amounts. Hendry says, “We caught over 6,000 moths in traps
baited with one ten-millionth of a gram of the compound in
just a few nights.” Traps will also be used this summer
although the emphasis will be on testing the compound as a
confusant.

Cautiously optimistic, Hendry says, “we’ve got severa
things going for us in this program.” For example, the males
apparently don’t use sight to locate females-only the at
tractant. “In addition, since the adult males are present foi
only three or four days, we only have to spray for a very short
time and the compound, a very stable one, won’t degrade in
water in case it rains."
This summer’s testing program represents the
culmination of over three years of research during which
Hendry, Mumma and their associates obtained the first
samples of the attractant from moths caught in the field
isolated and identified the active component, and then
duplicated the substance in the laboratory.
Hendry is still unsure of the role of the rest of the more thar
20 compounds in the natural attractant mixture but suspecU
one of being a sexual excitant. Efforts to identify anc
duplicate the excitant are still underway since he believes it
may offer yet another route to oak leaf roller control.
The current oak leaf roller infestation has been called “the
worst disaster that Pennsylvania forests have experienced in
this century.” Hardest hit have been Centre, Clinton, and
Lycoming counties where over a quarter million acres of oak
forest has been defoliated.
