USDA Limits Imports of pork from France will be further restricted by USDA, effective immediately, as a result of an African swine fever outbreak in that country’s Pyrenees Mountains. The disease is one of the world's most destructive swine illnesses. Officials of USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection .v "vice (APHIS) said that listing France as an infected cuuntiy will limit imports of French pork primarily to products that are canned, fully cooked and hermetically sealed. Cured and dried pork products still will be admitted, bat only for further USDA-approved heat processing. Im ports of live swine and fresh, chilled or frozen pork were already prohibited because of the presence of other livestock diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease and hog cholera. Other countries that are listed as infected with African swine fever are Spain, Portugal, Cuba and all nations in Africa. The disease outbreak was first reported Jan. 15,1974, on a farm near Hasparren in the Pyrenees Atlantique Depart ment (state), according to information received this month by APHIS officials from the Office of International SPECIAL INTRODUCTORY OFFER 0 Semen Now Available £ JJ* For the first time from the Purebred LIMOUSIN Bull ** SW keystone COMMANDER '“" 3 A HIGH PERFORMANCE BULL Calved 7-T3-71 205 Adjust Wt. 783 lbs. Outbreaks were also reported at four other-locations in southwestern France. APHIS officials said restrictions on the shipment of swine, pork and pork products to the United States are necessary to prevent spread of the disease to this country, where it could have a disastrous effect on the U. S. swine industry. A 1971 outbreak of African swine fever in Cuba resulted in the death of 33,000 swine within a three-month period. African swine fever is a highly contagious virus disease affecting swine only. Its symptoms, which are nearly identical to those of acute hog cholera, include high fever, red blotches on the skin, internal bleeding, collapse of the animal and nearly 100 percent mortality. Eradication is achieved only by destruction of all infected or exposed swine, quarantines on all farms in the vicinity of outbreaks, survey of swine herds, and cleaning and disin fection of all infected or exposed premises. Notice of the APHIS action on French imports will be published in the Federal Register March 26.
