They joined with 4-H
members from all Penn
sylvania counties to take
part in events designed to
help them become more
responsible adults.
The delegates met with
Governor Milton J. Shapp,
observed the State House of
Representatives and Senate
while in session, and toured
the Capitol and William
Penn Memorial Museum.
At the April I luncheon, the
group heard an address by
Pennsylvania Secretary of
Agriculture, James A.
McHale.
Following the luncheon, a
unique educational program,
“Democracy in Action,” was
conducted by Dauphin
County 4-H members.
The Honorable Edward D.
Backer, of the Prothonotary
Commonwealth Court of
Pennsylvania presented a
special session on the
“Judicial System in Action.”
The Monday banquet
program featured Michael
A. O’Pake, Senator from the
11th District, who discussed
“The Role of the State
Legislator;” and Dr.
Thomas B. King, Associate
Dean for Extension at The
Pennsylvania State
University, who presented
the topic, '“So You’re A
Grass Roots Ambassador.”
Senators and Represen
tatives were guests of the
County delegation at a
legislative breakfast April 2.
At this function, 4-H mem
bers and lawmakers
discussed local issues and
defined the purposes of the
educational youth program.
Speakers at the legislative
breakfast were Jerry S.
Walls, Executive Director of
the Lycoming County
Planning Commission, 1973
Distinguished 4-H Alumni
Winner; R. M. Eacley,
Regional Manager of the
Olin Corporation, St. Louis,
Mo.; and Leland G. Jinks,
Division Leader, 4-H Youth,
at Penn State.
