Carpet and Rug Care
When carpet or rug pile is
crushed down because of
furniture pressure or traffic,
Mrs. Helen Puskar, Ex
tension home furnishings
specialist at The Penn
sylvania State University,
suggests you try a steam
iron or a hot iron over a
damp cloth. Hold the iron
above the pile and avoid
pressing the pile with the
iron. After this treatment,
brush up the spots gently. It
may take two steamings to
restore the deeply crushed
areas.
Give carpeting or rugs in
heavily traveled spots a rest.
Move furniture occasionally
and reverse the rugs. Use a
rug in front of doorways,
chairs, or furnishings if die

We here at Doeblers are excited about a
new kind of hybrid corn called WAXY.
According to initial research data, WAXY
corn shows better feeding efficiency
(about 10%) when utilized by beef cattle.
(Research data from the University of
Illinois and others upon request.)
Doeblers have two varieties available
for Spring planting —64 X 103 days
and 73X Waxy, 108 days. In both yield
and appearance these two corns com
pare favorably with regular corn hybrids.
Try a limited acreage of WAXYS this
Spring, "see for yourself" how they
perform and then look for that "easy"
10% increase in efficiency.

presented with the Honorary
Chapter Farmer Award.
The Special Agricultural
Award was given to Abe
Bucher. The F.F.A. Foun-
rug is soft. But don’t use an
extra piece of carpeting for
th . purpose, cautions Mrs.
Puskar. The hard surface
backing will tear the carpet
fibers.
To improve the ap
pearance of charred spots
due to cigarette bums, use
small, sharp scissors and
carefully clip off the
blackened ends of tufts. Then
apply a small amount of the
following solution you make
yourself. Use a teaspoon of
neutral detergent-one that’s
recommended for fine
fabrics-and a teaspoon of
white vinegar to a quart of
warm water. Blot with white
absorbent tissue. Dry. And
brush the pile back into
place.
If the color of your carpet
or rug appears dull, Mrs.
Puskar says this doesn’t
necessarily mean it’s fading.
It can mean the floor
covering is getting a soil film

which needs professional
cleaning to remove. If your
carpet or rug shows this
dimming, treat it with ab
sorbent powder cleaning.
The first few times a new
carpet or rug is vacuumed,
the vacuum bag will
probably contain a lot of
fiber fluff. It’s normal for the
fluff to show up on the sur
face of new carpets and rugs.
And fluff doesn’t affect their
life or quality.
