"Production of Grapes for
Wine in Pennsylvania.”
According to Dr. Carl
Haeseler, Assoc, Prof.
Pomology at Penn State’s
Erie County Field Research
Laboratory, North East, this
funding will support a 3-year
continuation and expansion
of the current wine grape
project which was begun in
1966 and funded since that
time by the Pennsylvania
Department of Agriculture.
Objectives of the con
tinuing wine grape research
in Pennsylvania include
studies in viticulture,
enology, entomology and
plant pathology.
Viticultural research to be
carried out by Dr. Haeseler
will include continuing
evaluation of promising wine
grape cultivars at various
locations in the state and
evaluation of cultural
practices which might
overcome weaknesses of
desirable cultivars. Other
studies will concern search
for economical procedures
for bench grafting and
techniques for post-grafting
management.
Enological research to be
carried out by Dr. Robert
Beelman, Assistant
Professor of Food Science
Technology, will include the
making of wine from the
more promising cultivars.
Quality measurements will
be made of musts and
finished wines. Organoleptic
ratings will be made.
Entomological research to
be carried out by Dr, Gerald
L. Jubb, Assistant Professor
of Entomology, will involve
laboratory and field ex
periments on control of
important insect and mite
pests, including chemical
and biological methods. Life
history and biological
studies will be conducted

laboratory.
The project will also
identify fungal, bacterial
and virus diseases prevalent
in Pennsylvania wine grape
vineyards and develop
methods of controlling these
diseases.
Significant ac
complishments of Penn
State’s wine grape research
to date have been establish
ment of demonstration
vineyards in Erie, Adams,
Bucks, Franklin and Lan
caster counties. Some of the
most promising cultivars in
these studies have been
Chelois, Chancellor, De
Chaunac, Seyval Blanc and
Vidal Blanc. Also recom
mendations have been
developed for control of
aerial grape phylloxera and
grape erineum mite in ad
dition to recommendations
on cultural practices.
Finally, it has been
demonstrated that com
mercially acceptable wines
can be produced from the 5
commercially recommended
wine cultivars listed above.
Of significant importance
is the holding of The Penn
sylvania Wine Conference
each year during the month
of December at Penn State.
Six conferences have
already been held at which
important research findings
and other vital information
have been presented to wine
grape growers and wine
producers.
