costs, especially that of
grain, while live cattle prices
continue to slip. Some
feeders reported having to
take a $lOO loss on every
head sold.
Solutions to the problem, it
was felt, lay in the efforts to
increase consumer demand
for beef at the retailer level.
However, retailers, who
have taken the brunt of
consumer complaints', are
seeking assurances that
supplies are available to
feature special meat
promotions. Truck strikes
and fuel shortages have
added to the retailers’ un
certainty about ordering the
products.
Peter E. Marble, BIC
Chairman, emphasized that
the Council directors and
staff would “continue to
alert retailers of the
situation in the feeding
segment of the industry.
Additionally," he said, “we

will do everything possible to
work with retailers in
stepping up beef promotion
efforts.”
“As I see it,” said John A.
Copeland, Meat Board
Chairman, “about the only
thing we can do at this time
is to convince people who
buy and feature meat that
we do have a good supply
and that it will be here for a
long enough period to make
it worth their while to get
back into featuring beef.”
Results of such industry
action are already showing
up across the country. John
Huston, BIC Secretary,
noted that “many leading
retailers are taking ad
vantage of the unusual
market conditions and more
‘beef featuring’ is appearing
in their advertising. I am
confident this trend will
continue.”
The effects of these
retailer promotions are
