Livestock Exports Rise Exports of Pennsylvania bred livestock reached an all-time high of 1,166 head in 1973, Secretary of Agriculture Jim McHale announced. This figure compares with 1,060 head exported in 1972 and 146 in 1971. The majority of the cattle were purebred Holsteins and went mostly to countries in Europe for breeding pur poses. “The quality of Penn* sylvania dairy stock is becoming recognized around the world,” Secretary McHale said. “Buyers from abroad are in the state almost continually seeking recognized breeding lines.” Most of the state-bred cattle sold for export are rounded up through the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, which cooperates with the export sales division of the National Holstein-Friesien Service. Exports of Pennsylvania purebred livestock semen also has shown a dramatic rise in recent years as foreign breeders seek to upgrade their lines, Secretary McHale said. The number of ampules of semen exported from the state in 1973 totaled 55,979, compared with 28,433 the previous year. This contrasts with 146 ampules in 1971. Exports of Pennsylvania horses totaled 3,191 last L. Sechrist, Auctioneer. SAT. MARCH 9 - 11 A.M. D.S.T. While much of the Penn sylvania livestock was shipped by water, a sizable portion went by jet aircraft from the Harrisburg In ternational Airport, which is becoming an increasingly popular exit point for air shipments of cattle from as far away as Wisconsin. Six shipments via cargo jet ,from Harrisburg were made in 1973, accounting for a total of 1,067 animals. Destinations were Greece, Italy, Malta and Poland. So far in 1974 air shipments have been made to Iran and France. Shipments to France and Italy are ex pected in March and April. The cattle are trucked to Harrisburg from all parts of this state and from a dozen other states and gathered at the Farm Show Building facilities. There they are checked by U. S. Depart ment of Agriculture veterinarians. Only animals with a clean bill of health are allowed to be shipped. Pa.
