Harris Carter, left, and Willis Carter is Ortho Chemical's manager
Rohrer both spoke Tuesday night at of national fertilizer sales, while
P. L Rohrer’s annual appreciation Rohrer is president of the local firm,
banquet for farmer-customers.
Expert Discusses Fertilizer
Shortage At Rohrer
“Many of us don’t realize
that the U.S. is a bigger
factor in the world food
supply than the Mideast is in
the world oil supply,” Harris
Carter told a group of 75
farmers Monday night at the
Meadow Hills Dining Hall.
Carter is national manager
for Ortho Chemical’s fer
tilizer division, and he was
speaking at the annual P. L.
Rohrer appreciation
banquet.
Carter said agricultural
exports will do a great deal
to solve this country’s
balance of payments
problem, especially as other
countries get more money to
pay for farm products.

shifted from an emphasis on
price supports and surplus
storage to an all-out
production policy. This will
help increase farm income in
this country, Carter said, but
it will also aggravate some
problems.
One of those problems is
fertilizer availability.
“Fertilizer accounts for 30
percent of our agricultural
productivity,” Carter
commented. “Whatever can
be said about the condition of
agriculture can be said about
the condition of the fertilizer
industry. Fertilizer is the
key input of American
agriculture.”
The product that has done
so much for farmers has
been taken for granted,
Carter said. “At one tune,
we had an oversupply of
product, and seemingly
unlimited quantities. Prices
were driven down to the

The industry stopped ex

we find ourselves with too

Carter said the fertilizer
shortage should clear up in
about three y ,ars as new
plants come oi. <*ream.
Natural gas, the primary
raw material for the
manufacture of fertilizer is a
source of great concern to
industry leaders, Carter
commented. He said great
quantities of natural gas are
used for the generation of
electric power. This fact
sometimes makes it difficult
for fertilizer manufacturers
to get their needed supplies.

We here at Doeblers are excited about a
new kind of hybrid corn called WAXY.
According to initial research data, WAXY
corn shows better feeding efficiency
(about 10%) when utilized by beef cattle.
(Research data from the University of
Illinois and others upon request.)
Doeblers have two varieties available
for Spring planting -64 X Waxy, 103 days
and 73X Waxy, 108 days. In both yield
and appearance these two corns com
pare favorably with regular corn hybrids.
Try a limited acreage of WAXYS this
Spring, "see for yourself" how they
perform and then look for that "easy"
10% increase in efficiency.
