Melsheimer Reprint
The nation's first catalog
of Pennsylvania insects,
published in 1806 by a former
Hessian chaplain during the
Revolutionary War, has been
republished by the En
tomological Society of
Pennsylvania.
The reprint is entitled
“Frederick Valentine
Melsheimer, Parent of
American Entomology,” and
features a detailed preface
on the life and times of
Melsheimer by Dr. Robert
Snetsinger, professor of
entomology at The Penn
sylvania State University.
Melsheimer’s original
“Catalog of Insects of
Pennsylvania” made him
the father of American
entomology, Snetsinger
claims. The 86 page
publication is available from
Snetsinger at 106 Patterson
Building, University Park,
Pa. 16802. The cost is $3.75,
plus 25 cents for postage.
Although a German officer
serving the King of England
in 1776, Melsheimer resigned
his commission as chaplain
in 1779 and remained in
Pennsylvania, assuming
charge of several Lutheran
congregations in Lancaster
County.
In Colonial America
Frederick V. Melsheimer
was recognized as a highly
cultured and many-sided
scholar. He was a Lutheran
minister; second president
of Franklin College, now
Franklin and Marshall;
teacher of Latin, Greek,
German, and natural
science; and an authority on
insects and minerals.
Still surviving is the

Farm Show
Building
Reopens
After reviewing a list of
fire safety violations Friday,
Agriculture Secretary
James McHale said the farm
show building would be open
for next week’s Eastern
Sports and Outdoors Show.
McHale was notified
earlier this week that the 10-
acre complex was a firetrap
and had to be closed down
after the end of the Auto
Show Saturday night so
corrections could be made.
McHale met with Labor
and Industry Secretary Paul
Smith, Farm Show Director
Wellington Smith,
Harrisburg Fire Chief
Charles Henry and
Agriculture Department
staff members to discuss the
violations Friday afternoon.
McHale said of 13
violations cited, “eight or
nine” had already been
corrected. He called in the
Pennsylvania State
University to prepare plans
for long term safety goals for
the 40 year old building.
