CATTLE: Compared with
last week’s close: closmg
prices slaughter steers SO
LDO higher than late
previous week while heifer
prices advanced 1.00-1.50
under broad demand. Cows
2.00-3.00 higher. Bulls 1.00
higher. Meager feeder
supply insufficient to make a
good test of the trade.
Four day receipts 11,700 as
compared 18,400 previous
week and 19,700 a year ago.
Slaughter steers ap
proximately 38 percent,
heifers 42 percent with many
carrying moderate amount
of mud. Cows 15 percent,
small showing feeders. The
spreading truck strike
braked cattle marketings
down to only a fraction of
normal proportions.
Transportation facilities for
the finished product hard to
come by and virtually all
slaughterers operating on
day-to-day and hour-by-hour
basis; Some shut down
completely until some sort of
settlement forthcoming and
late week announcement
that agreement had been
reached still has not
alleviated conditions.
Packer demand limited to
availability of cooler space
with most filled to capacity.
Generally, heifer inquiry
more reliable than steers
with many cattle both
classes carrying con
siderable mud selling 50-1.00
below clean animals.
