This will enable itate and federal animal health officials to work with herd owners to test their animals and eliminate the disease. This provides an economical and efficient procedure for monitoring the swine population in the United States for evidence of the disease. This method is used because the number of brucellosis-infected hogs is so -low that it isn’t economically feasible to test every herd of hogs in the country. APHIS officials explain that a uniform coding system has been developed so that owners, market agencies, dealers, buying stations, and packers can identify sows and boars going to slaughter. This system utilizes a slap tattoo consisting of three letters and three numbers applied to the shoulder of the slaughter swine. The letters designate the state and market point, while the numbers are used to identify each lot or consignment. Although difficult to read on the live animal, the coded tattoo is clearly legible after the hog is slaughtered and dehaired. All market agencies, buying stations, dealers and packers are urged to cooperate with producers in the slap tattoo identification of all sows and boars. APHIS officials estimate that swine brucellosis can be eradicated in five years or PHONE: 768-8231 C. B.
