Summerdale Diagnostic Laboratory. The Penn sylvania Agriculture Department has been testing for the disease since 1970 when exotic Newcastle disease was first recognized as a distinct, emerging threat. The disease was brought into this country from im ported birds and then spread to the commercial poultry industry in several states. It recently took a heavy economic toll of California poultry flocks before being eradicated at a cost of $5O million. Dr. Mallinson said the surveillance program was initiated because of the possibility of exotic Newcastle disease being re introduced into the United States. Newcastle disease cannot be transmitted to humans. Reports Baltimore Eggs Wednesday, January Market steady. Demand generally slow. Supplies ample. Inter-State Requests Extension of Order 4 Robert B. McSparran, Peach Bottom, announced Wed nesday that local dairy farmers who are members of Inter- State Milk Producers’ Cooperative, will have Dr. Paul E. Hand, economist, testify in their behalf through Pennmarya Dairymen’s Cooperative Federation, at a Federal Milk Hearing on January 23,1974, at the Holiday Inn, Allentown, Pa. Local dairy leaders have requested an extension of Federal Milk Order 4 pricing area. McSparran, District 3 Director of Inter-State Milk Producers’ Cooperative, asserted, “This will aid dairymen in the present and new area to improve their bargaining position, and to obtain uniform prices for their milk.” For many dairymen not now shipping to Inter* State, or to other dealers under Order 4, it will mean in* creases in Class prices up to $10.78 per hundredweight, or 23.1 cent per quart. In addition, Hand will ask that the Class II price for milk be increased over $l.OO for products other than butter and powder. This action by Inter-State should add thousands of dollars in return to dairymen and should provide stable markets for the long-run future. The newly proposed area to be added to Order 4 includes Philadelphia, Delaware, Bucks, Montgomery, Adams, Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Northampton, Perry, and York Counties in Pennsylvania and Washington County, Maryland. (Philadelphia, Delaware, and parts of Bucks and Montgomery Counties are now in Middle Atlantic Milk Marketing Order area which also includes Southern New Jersey, Delaware, Eastern Maryland, and Northern Virginia.)
