Guldin Speaking Contest at University Park. Second place honors went to Charles E. Porter, a senior majoring in animal industries from Brownsville. Speaking on “What is the Cost of Food,” Porter will receive $l2O as second prize. Donald Haldeman of Reading, a sophomore in horticulture will receive $BO for third place with his speech on “Plant and Man Interaction.” Honorable mention was awarded to William M. Riden of McClure, a junior in agronomy; David L. Ger stenlauer of Ephrata, a sophomore majoring in agricultural education; and Lewis M. Sterrett of Ship pensburg, a senior in animal industries. Each earned $4O. Finals of the Guldin Public Speaking Contest were held on January 16 with Mrs. Paul R. Guldin of Yellow House attending. Mrs. Guldin’s husband was at one time a faculty member in poultry science at Penn State. He established funds for the contest because of the great deal of importance he placed on the benefits of public speaking. Checks will be presented to the winners at a College of Agriculture faculty meeting in March. Other participants in cluded George Cudoc, Jr. of Butler, sophomore in animal science; Earl A. F. Brink, president of National Dairy Council. Miss Culbertson has served as assistant librarian since June 1972. She succeeds Miss Marian White, who has been NDC Librarian for the past 12 years and who retired as of December 31, 1973. Miss Culbertson earned her B,A. degree in Library Science at Wartburg College, Waverly, lowa, and her Master of Arts in Library Science at Rosary College, River Forest, Illinois. Judges for the Guldin Public Speaking Contest were Dr. Edward D. Glass, Jr., associate professor of Garden Spot Young Fanners The Garden Spot Young Fanners will hold a meeting to study the market hog market outlook and marketing alter natives on Tuesday, January 29, 1974, at 7:45 P.M. in the agriculture classroom of the Garden Spot High School. The meeting will be of interest to both breeders and finishers as an in-depth study of grade and yield marketing and market hog contracting will be made. Speakers will be Mr. Howard Sparlin from the Penn sylvania Agriculture Commodities Association division of Pennsylvania Farmers Association who will explain grade and yield marketing and a representative from Gehman’s Feed Mill in Denver who will describe their market hog contracting program. In addition, farmers Mark Nestleroth, breeder from Manheim, who has used grade and yield marketing for several years and Monroe Good from Bowmansville, who contracts over 1200 head per year, will share some of their experiences. A panel discussion format will be used. All area swine producers are invited to attend the meeting. Refreshments will be served. NDC’s Library, at NDC headquarters at 111 N.
