—Lancaster Farming, Saturday. January 19. 1974 16 ENERGY SAVERS by from the WISE FAMILY This week is car tune-up week at the Wise liouse. Paul changed the air filter, replaced the spark plugs and distributor points and ad justed the ignition timing. Did you know that a tuned car averages six percent better fuel economy than an untuned car? Other items that need periodic maintenance for fuel economy are the car buretor, cylinder com pression and lubrication. The car will last longer and will give better mileage if its maintenance requirements are followed. Changing Paul’s driving habits has helped save fuel and will prolong the life of the car, too. No more fast starts that can use up to 15 per cent more fuel than moderate acceleration from a stop. The biggest energy use in the Wise home, as in most homes, is the heating system. No matter what fuel you use, the conservation measures we’ve taken can help you stretch your heating dollars. Storm doors and windows pay for themselves in heating savings over a few seasons. A dead air space, excellent insulation, is formed when they are used. We’ve added weather stripping and caulk around all the windows. And after our last fire in the fireplace, I made sure the damper was closed to prevent drafts. The throbbing sounds of the stereo frequently greet us when the house is empty. Larry is the culprit, and he is guilty of a common waste of enerty - leaving radios, TV’s and stereos on when no one is listening. He comes home from school, turns on the stereo and then goes outside. Blazing lights all over the house really irritate Paul. We should all make it a habit to turn off lights when we leave a room. Replacing the bulbs with ones of less wattage also helps conserve electricity. Your use of the lamp will determine the wattage necessary; experiment to see if a dimmer light is still effective. Doing dishes is a never ending household chore. To save some energy, we’ve stopped using the power drying cycle of the dish washer. The dishes air dry in the machine just as well and it saves the energy needed for power drying. Penny has also changed some of her practices in the laundry. Instead of always using the clothes dryer, she’s gone back to hanging the clothes out on nice days. The chotbes smell so much fresher it’s worth the extra effort! LANCASTER LABORATORIES, he.
