Omaha Cattle Thursday, January 10 Compared with last weeks close - slaughter steers closed 5.508.50 higher and heifers 6.00-7.00 higher marking the sharpest one week advance since ceiling limitations were per manently removed following World War II in 1946. Cows however, closed 3.004.00 lower and bulls were fully steady. Feeder cattle sold 4.008.00 higher in reflection of advancing steer and heifers prices. Four day receipts 20,400 as compared 13,800 previous holiday week and 23,900 a year ago. Slaughter steers approximately £4 percent, heifers 35 percent, cows 10 percent and feeders 15 percent. Overall finish steer and heifer supply attractive with large percentage Choice and moderate volume higb-Choice and Prime, most relatively clean. For fifth successive week, steer and heifer prices soared upward under stimulation provided by continued moderate slaughter under federal inspection and a sky rocketing _ beef trade. Current price levels were some 12.00-14.00 above the low time recorded as recently as early December 1973 with some 1250-1400 pound yield grade 4 steers 15.00-16.00 higher. During the current period weight was usually not a major price determining factor. Virtually all buying in terests were in need of cattle for immediate requirements with bad weather conditions contributing to the urgency. The upward price spiral has virtually eliminated cattle export to Canada but loss of this outlet has been offset in large measure by an aggressive feeder demand.
