The 17-year-old twins, sons of
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Reist,
consistently show the state’s top
' tobacco at the Pennsylvania
Farm Show, and twice they’ve
taken the state championship.
Boyd, son of Elmer Boyd, is a
member of Lincoln 4-H Com
munity Club. The father and son
team annually harvests about 30
acres of com.
Although there were only two
field corn entries, the first and
second place could still represent
stiff competition at the Farm
Show.
The second place corn exhibit
is also a state-renowned corn
grower, Douglas Rohrer, 14-year
old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Rohrer, 1623 Book Road.
The Garden Spot 4-H Com
munity Club member had the
champion field corn entry at last
year’s Farm Show.
Both contests were judged by
John Yocum, agronomist and
superintendent of the Southeast
Pennsylvania Field Research
Laboratory at Landisville.
Yocum said he judged the
tobacco on its uniformity, color,
size and width, elasticity, grain
and insect or mold damage—if

Kerry Boyd, this year's
Lancaster County corn
champion.
“I picked the champion for its
thinness and because it was more
elastic than the reserve cham
pion,” commented Yocum.
He said he picked the reserve
on its uniformity of color, length
and the fact that it was “grown
out well.”
In the tobacco wrapper class,
Richard Hess, 9, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Wilbur Hess, Lititz RD2,
placed second. Arthur Reist
placed third while Richard’s 11-
year-old brother, Michael, placed
fourth. Kerry Boyd had the fifth
place entry.
In the filler tobacco class,
Alfred Reist had the second place
tobacco Third place filler was
exhibited by Tomothy Swarr, son
of Mr and Mrs Earl Swarr,

Radial Tires Save
On Gas Mileage
Radial tires which come on
new cars can reduce gasoline
consumption by seven to ten
per cent when run at constant
highway speeds, according to
the Firestone Tire & Rubber
Company.
The tests compared com
parable radial tires with
belted tires, both of which
are original equipment on
1974 automobiles.
The tests were made at the
company’s test center at Foi t
Stockton, Texas, with sophis
ticated measuring devices
and equipment.
Young drivers are still in

numbers far disproportionate
