Bute Stresses Energy
Use in Agriculture
"The use of energy by
agriculture is much broader than
producing the grain and fiber for
food," stressed Secretary of
Agriculture Earl L. Butz as he
addressed the first meeting of the
Agriculture Advisory Committee
to the Federal Energy Office,
recently. "It includes the tran
sporting of raw agricultural
products to the processing plant

and the movement of .the food and
fiber products to the retail outlets
for domestic and foreign con
sumers.
“Agriculture faces the biggest
challenge in 1974 it has ever faced
as the nation’s farmers and
ranchers try to produce at peak
production capacity with limited
energy inputs of fuel, fertilizer
and other supplies,’’ emphasized
Secretary Butz. "The top people
in government understand the
need for energy for agriculture,”
“We have a job to do that-is
broader than our own selfish
interest. We must help inject
common sense in solving the
allocation of shortages as we
work on the nation’s energy
problem,” said William J. Kuh
fuss, president of the American
Farm Bureau Federation, and
chairman of the new advisory
commmttee.
