Sale by Edwin M. Hoover, Lititz RD4; Formula Feed Mainly By Farmers Farmers are major feed manufacturers, accounting for 21 percent of the total output of formula feed in 1969. A report by Farmer Cooperative Service (FCS), U.S. Department of Agriculture, shows that 1,810 cooperatively owned plants with outputs of 1,000 tons or more produced 21 million tons of formula feed in 1969. The volume was 59 percent greater than 10 years ago. Information on the cooperative share of feed manufacturing comes from an Economic John E. and Paul E. Martin, Auctioneers. SAT. JAN 5 9:30 A.M. - Chas. Frank Dispersal at Belmont, N.Y., 15 miles from Genesee, Pa. Another sale by Rumseys’ of Bath, N.Y. WED. JAN 9 - 11:30 A.M. - Yorkshire Show & Sale sponsored by Penna. Yorkshire Co-Op Assn., Inc. at the 1974 Penna. Farm Show. Show Monday, January 7-1:30 P.M. (Continued On Page 30) Produced Research Service study published in 1972 on the total formula feed industry. The cooperative share was broken out and published as a separate report by FCS. Farmers buy more feed through their cooperatives than any other single commodity, the FCS report states. In 1969-70, these purchases were about $1.3 billion, or 33 percent of their total co-op purchases of supplies. Feed manufacturing, the report indicates, is becoming a more specialized activity This change has affected the type of feed produced, services provided and method of delivery. Farmer-owned feed mills do more custom mixing than do other mills. Though the farmers’ mills account for less than a quarter of total tonnage manufactured, they do 35 percent of all custom grinding and mixing. Custom mixing by cooperatives rose 31 percent in the past decade, the report states. As could be expected, more feed was shipped out of mills in bulk by truck to the farm. The percent of feed shipped in bulk rose sharply, from 34 percent in 1959 to 74 percent in 1969. Shipments by truck rose from 62 percent to 89 percent. A third of cooperative manufactured feed is con centrated in five States: Wisconsin, 2 million tons; lowa, 1.95 million tons; New York, 1.36 million tons; Ohio, 1.34 million tons; and Missouri, 1.24 million tons. Cooperative production in the past 10 years has been oriented to dairy, swine, and beef feeds. Dairy feed production nearly doubled, from 2.25 million tons in 1959 to a shade under 4 million tons by 1969. Swine feed production more than doubled (under a million tons to 2V 2 million tons); so did beef feed production (under a quarter million tons to more than 2 million tons). Broiler, turkey, and other types of feed production increased slightly. Egg feed production, though 2% million tons and 20 percent of the total, remained practically constant. Single copies of “Cooperatives’ Position in Feed Manufac turing,” FCS Research Report 25, are available from Farmer Cooperative Information, Room 1474 South Building, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. C. 20250. Jugger’s Processor Conference Slated A Jugger’s Dairy Processor Conference is scheduled to run from Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 12 noon until noon Thursday Feb. 7 at University Park, Pa.
