Shrodes Auctioneers Phones 301-996-2424 or 301-452-8617 Frank Hiser Clerk Supersonic transports could affect future crop production by increasing the amount of ultraviolet (UV) light that reaches the earth, a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agronomist said recently. Dr. Gerald E. Carlson, with USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Beltsville, Md., spoke before a meeting of the American Society of Agronomy reporting results of experiments with plants subjected to ultraviolet light. Such light increases when the exhaust from supersonic tran sports reacts with the ozone in the air. Though supersonic flights are limited now, they are ex pected to increase worldwide in the next 20 years. Dr. Carlson’s experiments with 10:30 a.m. E.S.T. FARM MACHINERY Lancaster Farming, Saturday. November 17,1973 owners plants subjected to UV beams at rates that could be expected to be caused by supersonic transports, showed that though many crops are not affected, a few such as tomatoes, lettuce, coleus and millet are highly sensitive to the UV light. For example, he said, when green peppers were ex posed to UV light, production was reduced one-third. Growth of all plants was reduced at levels of UV light well above those ex pected to be caused by supersonic flights. One plant, the chrysan themum, has a positive reaction to UV light. At a particular point in growth, exposure of chrysanthemums to such light causes them to branch. This could be a useful tool for florists who must now rely on chemical or mechanical pinching the terminal buds of these plants to encourage the desired branching.
